Common Dental Emergencies

Severe Toothache

Persistent or throbbing tooth pain can be a sign of an underlying dental problem, such as an infection, abscess, deep decay, a cracked tooth, or inflammation affecting the tooth’s nerve. Our emergency dental care focuses on providing fast, effective relief while addressing the underlying pain.

Chipped or Broken Teeth

Whether caused by an accident, sports injury, biting down on something hard, tooth decay, or an old filling giving way, a chipped or broken tooth can affect your comfort, appearance, and ability to chew properly. Even a small chip can expose sensitive areas of the tooth.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out permanent tooth is a serious dental emergency, but prompt treatment may give the tooth a better chance of being saved. If possible, seek emergency dental care immediately, ideally within 30–60 minutes. Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown (the part that is normally visible in the mouth), avoiding contact with the root.

Dental Abscess or Infection

A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. Left untreated, it can spread to the jaw, head, or neck. We provide urgent drainage, antibiotics, and a follow-up treatment plan.

Lost Crown or Filling

A missing crown or filling can leave the underlying tooth exposed to bacteria, temperature sensitivity, and additional damage. Even if the tooth is not painful, it is important to have it evaluated promptly to prevent the problem from getting worse.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Cuts, lacerations, or puncture wounds involving the gums, tongue, cheeks, or lips can cause significant bleeding and may require prompt dental evaluation. These injuries can result from accidents, falls, sports injuries, biting the soft tissues, or sharp objects.

FAQ – How Can We Help For You?

A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, a knocked-out or fractured tooth, signs of infection (swelling, fever, pus), or damage to a dental restoration that leaves the tooth exposed. If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies, call our office; we’ll help you determine the best next step.

Yes. We set aside time each day specifically for emergency patients. When you call, our team will work to schedule you as quickly as possible  often within hours of your call. The sooner you contact us, the sooner we can help.

Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface) never the root. Gently rinse it with water if it’s dirty, but do not scrub it or remove any tissue fragments. If possible, place it back in the socket and hold it in place. If you can’t re-insert it, keep it moist in a cup of milk or saliva. Call us immediately and come to the office within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

We accept most major dental insurance plans and will work with your provider to maximize your coverage. For patients without insurance, we offer flexible payment options and financing arrangements so cost is never a barrier to receiving urgent care. Please visit our Insurance and Financial Arrangements pages for details.

If you experience a dental emergency outside of our regular office hours, call our main number at (610) 799-0600 for guidance. You can manage symptoms at home with a cold compress, over-the-counter pain medication, and by keeping the affected area clean. If you experience uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, or swelling that impairs your ability to swallow, go to your nearest hospital emergency room immediately.
